Port of Qingdao volume up 2pc in January 2009

The Port of Qingdao moved 852,000 TEU in January, up two per cent year on year with overall cargo tonnage up three per cent up to 25.7 million tonnes. Both the volumes have set new records, Xinhua reported.
In January, the port's throughput per second averaged at 9.6 tonnes. 36,270 cargo distribution railroad cars run in and out of the port during this month. While the port's throughput was growing, its energy consumption fell 3.9 per cent over the preceding year.
The port's container throughput exceeded 10 million TEU while general cargo tonnage surpassed 300 million tonnes in 2008.
