Charleston cuts rates from January 1 for three months

2008-12-30 00:00:00

THE Port of Charleston will make an across-the-board five per cent cut in contracted rates for container customers from January 1 for three months, the South Carolina State Ports Authority announced.

Authority president and chief executive Bernard Groseclose said the move is designed to help shipping lines face tough economic times, reported The Associated Press.

Mr Groseclose said it also will help companies maintain their present service and avoid cuts that could affect the economies of Charleston and South Carolina. Charleston's container business was down four per cent year on year from July to November.
