Thieves stop train coming from Lazaro Cardenas

2008-12-30 00:00:00

A gang of about 20 men armed with assault rifles stopped a freight train and broke into containers that were being transshipped from the Mexican port of Lazaro Cardenas.

The Associated Press reported that the thieves may have been after drums of pseudoephedrine, a chemical used to make illegal drugs.

Press reports said the thieves parked a vehicle across the tracks on Friday, forcing a train operated by Kansas City Southern to stop, and then pulled guns on the train's crew.

Pseudoephedrine is used a precursor in the synthesis of methamphetamine.
