P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises is defending its response to an alleged rape of a New Zealand woman aboard one of its ships in the South Pacific.

The 46-year-old woman says she was raped by a 37-year-old Australian man as she slept aboard the Pacific Star on the morning of New Year's Eve.

P&O Cruises says staff immediately notified police and preserved the woman's cabin as a crime scene.

The death of a Queensland woman in 2002 from an overdose of a date-rape drug aboard another of its cruise liners led the company to introduce CCTV cameras and drug sniffer dogs.

The police in New Caledonia say the rape complaint has been passed to New Zealand police to investigate.
