A U.S. teenager's cruise to Mexico ended dramatically when she was airlifted to the USS Ronald Reagan to have her appendix removed.
Laura Montero's appendix burst Saturday on board the Dawn Princess, ABC News reported. The ship was off the coast of Baja California.
It was a matter of life and death so it wasn't very good at all, Trudy LaField, the 14-year-old's mother, told Good Morning America. The Reagan was 550 miles away.
The aircraft carrier, alerted to the medical emergency, sent two helicopters for Laura and her family who live in Albion, Ill.
They evacuated the whole back end of the ship so that the helicopter could come and lower the basket. They put her in the basket, LaField said. She had a little stuffed animal dog and she was holding that for dear life.
Montero's appendix was removed on board the Reagan and she was expected to make a full recovery after undergoing the emergency surgery, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported. She and her family arrived in San Diego Tuesday.
