New feeder service makes first Halifax call

2008-07-29 00:00:00

Great Lakes Feeder Line has made its first call in the Port of Halifax.

The new service will operate a multipurpose ship capable of carrying containers, project and roll-on/roll-off cargo between Halifax, Montreal and Toronto on an eight to 10-day rotation.

Elias Haige, director of Great Lakes Feeder Line Agency, said the ship was discharging cargo from its first voyage from Montreal Friday and offers regular liner service with a transit time of about three and a half days between Halifax and Montreal and five days between Halifax and Toronto. The ship is self-sustaining with a 70-ton crane and ro/ro ramp.

Haige said the service is targeting international customers looking for alternatives to road or rail to move their cargo from Halifax to inland destinations.
