Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel inspected and good to go

 CHINA Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel Regulation Phase III has passed the national final acceptance tests, marking the largest waterway in the history of water transport construction projects after 40 years of research and 13 years of building, reports Xinhua.


The estuary channel, featuring a total length of 92.2 kilometres, 350-400 meters wide at the bottom and a water depth 12.5 meters, now is officially put into operation. At present, the Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel to meet the third and fourth generation containerships and five-tonne ships can weather two-way navigation. The fifth and sixth generation containerships and 10-tonne ships and 20-tonne bulk carriers with lighter loads can use the channel.


The Yangtze Estuary Deepwater Channel regulation project was divided into three phases. The first started in January 1998, and was completed in 2000 with the channel depth increased from seven metres to 8.5 metres. The second phase started in April 2002, and was completed in March 2005 with the channel depth increased from 8.5 to 10 metres and extended to Nanjing. The third phase started in September 2006.
