Despite the sanctions imposed by a number of western countries, Iranian ports handled 97m tons of non-oil cargo in 2010, an increase of 12% year-on-year. Container throughput increased by 11% to just over 3m teu. And the private sector invested around US$57m in the ports sector.
Shahid Rajaee (Bandar Abbas) is the largest port in Iran and its container throughput of more than 2.59m teu was up 17% in 2010, largely due to the Iran government employing policies to turn it into a regional hub, explained Seyed Ataollah Sadr, managing director of the state-owned Ports and Maritime Organization (PM)).
Sadr added that the policies include “The government offering discounts on transhipment cargo from Shahid Rajaee, including 57% discount on import tariffs 83% on transhipment, 50% on container warehousing and 20 – 70% discount for transhipment vessels.
