The Houston Port Commission has approved separate memoranda of friendship and trade cooperation between the Port of Houston Authority and two ports in Mexico - Progreso and Dos Bocas. In each case, the signatory ports agree to "conduct programs and activities to bring about understanding and a closer relationship with each other, as well as the promotion of increased trade between their two countries." No dates have been set for the signing ceremonies.
Port Authority CEO Alec G. Dreyer reported the port continued to exhibit strong growth trends in all cargo commodity groupings, noting in particularly its "booming" steel trade, with tonnage up 31% for the month and 69% year-to-date compared to 2010. Container revenue jumped 31% as a result of "strong teu gains in March (+16.1%) and April (+19.4%). Year-to-date, the teu count increased by 9% and containerised cargo by 11%,” he said.
