Throughput of Ventspils port is up 5% to 12,34 million tons

Freight flows passing through Free Port of Ventspils rose by 5% in January-May, 2011, to 12,34 million tons, the Port Authority statistics said.


In the reporting period the port transshipped 6,42 million tons of oil products, 5% more than a year earlier, 1,33 million tons of fertilizer, a 37-percent growth, 2,33 million tons of coal (+34%). Ore volumes fell 39% to 624,000 tons, shipments of grain slumped by 14 times, to 21,000 tons, timber volumes fell by 5% to 235,000 tons.


In Jan-May, container traffic rose as much as 2.2 times to 14,400 TEUs. The number of arrivals increased by 8% to 793 vessels.


Latvia’s Free port of Ventspils is a deepwater ice-free port. The country’s premier port ranks among leading ports on the Baltic Sea and top 20 European ports. The port can accommodate Aframax size tankers of 130.000 DWT and Panamax vessels of 75.000 DWT. The port encompasses 2623,9 hectares with terminals for handling oil products, crude oil, liquid chemicals, mineral fertilizer, metals, forest products, coal, grain, juice concentrates, containers and Ro-Ro cargoes. In 2010, cargo throughput of the port decreased year-over-year by 6.8% to 24,815,000 tons.
