CHONGQING airport plans to build a third, 3,800-metre runway by 2015 to meet the demands of new larger, aircraft coming on stream, reports Xinhua.
The airport also plans to spend CNY1 billion (US$154.4 million) on building a 170,000-square metre cargo terminal on a 36.4-hectare site inside the Chongqing Airport Bonded Area. The first phase project covering 30,000 square metres has been launched and is scheduled to start operations by end of year.
Railway ministry plans call for Chongqing to be the fifth largest rail hub after Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Wuhan. With a national intermodal terminal and the country's only bonded rail area, Chongqing has increasingly favourable environment to develop a logistics network.
The city also plans to attract carriers to set their regional base there and gather freight forwarders, ship brokers, financial, insurance and legal service providers to form an important shipping hub and financial centre in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.
At recent logistics and trade summit in the city, experts discussed how Chongqing can bring these favourable conditions into play and agreed that the city can be a hub connecting west China to the world with these advantages.
