US IMPORTS from China have increased 10 per cent to nearly 60,000 TEU since April, according to PIERS data.
Auto parts were imported into the US in the greatest volume, up 25 per cent, or 10,462 TEU, followed by tyres at 18 per cent (5,490 TEU) and women's and infant wear, up 28 per cent (6,475 TEU), reported Newark's Journal of Commerce. Toy imports slipped five per cent (1,963 TEU) from a year earlier.
American imports of footwear from China increased 12 per cent and accounts for 75 per cent of footwear imports into the United States, despite rising production in south east Asia. Chinese furniture imports increased two per cent.
The 1.4 million TEU April increase followed a three per cent year-on-year fall in March. JoC economist Mario Moreno forecasted that imports would grow 4.6 per cent this year while exports would rise 10 per cent. Auto parts shipments from China increased 48 per cent, or 3,812 TEU, to a total of 11,803 TEUs.
Italy also enjoyed increased imports to the US, up 23 per cent. Vietnam was up 16 per cent and Japanese exports increased six per cent.
