Tianjin builds transhipments with 'dry ports' in 20 cities over 12 provinces

NORTH China's port city Tianjin has already had 20 "dry port" projects in 20 hinterland cities in 12 provinces, including those in operation and being built, Xinhua reports.

"Dry port" is a facility that a sea port builds in a hinterland city to collect cargo. It offers greater convenience for shippers in the hinterland region while expanding the sea port's business.

Among the 20 dry ports of Tianjin, seven are already operational, including the ones in Beijing's Pinggu District, Hebei province's Shijiazhuang city and Inner Mongolia's Baotou city. Another three will be up and running this year.

In the first quarter, the seven dry ports in operation handled 37,000 TEU , up 33.8 per cent year on year.

Tianjin's dry ports offers efficient customs clearance and one-stop services for shippers and this helps the port win transshipment growth. Tianjin also offers priority to the cargo from its dry ports when going through procedures and port operations and also reserves exclusive stack yard for such cargo.

This year, Tianjin has been strengthening the development of dry ports by expanding coverage and increase railway container transportation services. It is now operating container train services to Xian, Chengdu, Shizuishan Baotou and Erenhot and moved 93,816 TEU in the first quarter.
