Baltic Coal Terminal to double coal volume to 4m tons this year

2011-05-27 00:00:00

Based in Free Port of Ventspils Baltic Coal Terminal expects a twofold growth of coal throughput year-on-year up to 4 million tons, BCT’s Board Chairman Ilya Sokolov, said speaking on Thursday at the Baltic Forum. Major coal shippers are MPO Kuzbass (co-owner of the terminal) and Siberian Business Union.

Commenting on the possible impact of the coal terminal in Ust-Luga (Leningrad region, Russia) on coal traffic at the Ventspils terminal, Igor Sokolov said this would lead to greater competition between coal terminals on the Baltic Sea. However, he expects that Baltic Coal Terminal will have sufficient cargo base provided by the terminal co-owner (MPO Kuzbass) and other companies that would be interested in the advantages that Ventspils ice-free port can offer.

Baltic Coal Terminal is a JV of two companies: CJSC MPO Kuzbass and Ventspils Commercial Sea Port. In 2010, coal throughput of the terminal amounted to about 2 million tons. Currently, the coal handled at the BCT’s terminal is exported largely to the UK, Belgium, Spain and Morocco.
