MOL has agreed to introduce the 'third year programme' with seven merchant marine schools involved in the Magsaysay Institute of Shipping (MIS) in Philippines. The move is aimed at cultivating seafarers with high awareness of safety standards during vessel operation.
The institute selected new Filipino seafarers from among third-year students at merchant marine schools, and gave them one year of training on the shipping company's training ship and other of its operated vessels.
A statement from the ocean liner group said the new program will bring forwards a selection of new seafarers by one year. They will be educated and trained for the second half of a four-year curriculum at university, completing their university education with courses under MIS management.
The programme was licensed as being equivalent to a university education under the Academe-Industry Linkage Programme promoted by the Philippine government, and will start in June.
MIS was jointly established by MOL and Magsaysay Maritime Corporation in 1993. The institute provides safety education, various types of practical training, and rule-based training in preparation for serving aboard vessels operated by the Japanese shipping company.
