Felixstowe port receives EU grant to help shift cargo from road to rail

2011-05-24 00:00:00

BRITAIN's biggest container port, Felixstowe, north east of London, owned by Hong Kong's Hutchison conglomerate, will receive a European Union EUR5 million (US$7 million) grant to defray costs of building the EUR37 million the New North Rail Terminal.

The EU said that the main purpose of the grant was to support a cargo shift from road to rail and reduce heavy trucks on the A14 highway, which runs north west from Ipswich near the port, cross country to the consumer-rich Midlands ending a Rubgy, not far the Birmingham.

The ship-rail dock will have an annual capacity of 1.1 million TEU when it opens next year as part the Hutchison Ports UK infrastructure improvement programme, which includes the Felixstowe South expansion project, reports London's Containerisation International.
