Asia Pacific air cargo 2010 roars back into black: AAPA

2011-05-23 00:00:00

THE Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA) has gained net profit of US$9.5 billion in the region, after $1.7 billion loss in 2009 it brought in a 6.4 per cent net margin above industry average.

The region's 23 airlines surveyed increased its combined total revenue year on year by 30 per cent to $147 billion, boosted by a cargo revenue uplift of 52 per cent to $22 billion.

"Buoyed by a firm recovery in premium business travel and a very strong rebound in demand for air freight, Asia Pacific carriers saw a welcome return to profitability in 2010, after two years of heavy losses," said AAPA director general Andrew Herdman.

Mr Herdman said the strong rebound was supported by the region's active role in international aviation policy with medium to long-term prospects as "very positive" only dampened by oil prices.

But the effects of the Japanese earthquake are evident despite early signs of a recovery in demand for travel to and from Japan, he said.
