Following two years of planning alongside Copenhagen Malmö Port (CMP) Finnlines has relocated all its ferry services to Malmö’s North Harbour, Norra Hamnen. At the same time CMP’s new Combi Terminal for rail freight has started operations at the North Harbour.
“All ferry traffic has disappeared from Malmö’s inner city, which is a big advantage in many ways, not least because there will be fewer lorries driving through the centre of town. The new modern terminal is larger and will eventually enable us to double our ro-ro capacity,” said Bart Steijaert, who heads CMP’s port and terminal operations.
Finnlines is the first shipping line to relocate, moving the 250,000 trailers and lorries it handles each year, along with its passenger services between Malmö and Travemünde.
The new terminal can accommodate three ferries simultaneously and currently has a water depth of 8.5 metres, which could be increased to 10 metres in future. In total, SEK900m (US$142m) has been invested in the new harbour, which will increase CMP’s freight capacity in Malmö by a factor of five.
The new Combi terminal will be used to connect rail traffic to the North Harbour, where an 800 metre long connection track and two loading/unloading tracks can handle an entire train.
