SNCF Geodis, the transports and logistics division of SNCF Group, has announced that its Lorry-Rail division will launch a new 2-day rail service between the Spanish border and southern Sweden, via Krefeld and Hanover, from this autumn, expanding the current road link between Perpignan (Le Boulou) to Luxembourg (Bettembourg).
Starting with three round trips per week, the service, partly operated by Swedish railway operator Green Cargo, will make it possible for carriers to load trailers, containers and swap bodies onto trains.
The service will cover the 2,000 kilometres distance within 48 hours, compared to three days minimum by road transportation. In addition, each trip will reduce CO2 emissions by 68 tonnes, resulting in a total of 80,000 trucks being taken off European roads every year.
