FRANKFURT Airport cargo volume increased 12.8 per cent in April to 191,087 tonnes year on year, scoring a record monthly high with first four-month throughput up 5.6 per cent to 744,483 tonnes.
Airport owner Fraport said first quarter pre-tax profit increased 11 per cent to US$732 million drawn on revenues of $1.18 billion, up 6.8 per cent.
"The impact of the global financial and economic crisis on traffic at Frankfurt airports has now been relegated to the history books," declared the Fraport statement.
Cargo volume fell 0.3 per cent in March, its first decline in 18 months, which was blamed on the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, with whom the airport does much business.
Cargo traffic at the five airports Fraport controls - Frankfurt, Lima, Peru; Antalya, Turkey and Varna and Burgas in Bulgaria - grew 13.4 per cent in April, reported Newark's Journal of Commerce. Lima was the best performing with freight up 18.6 per cent to 20,957 tonnes.
