Strong growth in traffic in April

2011-05-13 00:00:00

In April, 1,958,610 passengers used Berlin’s airports. This is an increase of 36.9 per cent over the same month of the previous year.

The comparison with the results of April 2010 is influenced by the impact of the volcanic ash cloud which grounded many flights in that month: at Berlin’s airports, around 3,500 flights were cancelled, and more than 350,000 passengers were unable to travel to or from Tegel and Schoenefeld.

Even adjusted to compensate for the impact of the ash cloud in the previous year, Berlin Airports’ April 2011 results still show a good increase of more than 10 per cent.

In April 2011 Schoenefeld Airport reported a total of 592,204 passengers. This result is equivalent to growth of 21.8 per cent.
In Tegel in the same period 1,366,406 passengers used the airport, which is an increase of 44.6 per cent.

Together, Schoenefeld and Tegel reported 19,688 flight movements. This is also a significant increase (+21.1 per cent).

Strong growth was also reported for air freight: with 2,556 tons, the volume of freight flown increased by 33.5 per cent.

In total, in the first four months of 2011 the two airports handled 6,973,838 passengers (+14.7 per cent), of which 2,113,943 were handled by Schoenefeld (+5.5 per cent) and 4,859,859 by Tegel (+19.1 per cent).
