An estimated annual growth rate of 8% has prompted Chilean ports to announce a series of investments to cater for demand.
These include new container terminals at both San Antonio and Valparaiso, along with two new berths to be built at Talcahuano.
In the all-important fifth region, traffic is expected to grow by 13% annually up to 2013.
In the meantime, representatives from the Chilean Port Workers Confederation have met with the senator representing the Magallanes region to discuss the possibility of establishing a single national port concession process that would guarantee pensions to those workers not taken on by a private concessionaire.
