New Mangalore Port receives 2nd box vessel

2011-05-11 00:00:00

m.v. CMA CGM Anna Purna became the second container vessel to call at New Mangalore Port this fiscal late last week, according to Exim News Service.

The vessel, which sailed in from the West African port of Cotonou, unloaded 381 TEUs of raw cashew for the cashew processing units in and around Mangalore and 63 TEUs of restows.

According to a New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) release, the advantage of main line vessels directly calling at the Port is reduced transit time and lesser handling cost. It takes only 25 days direct between Mangalore and West Africa whereas the transit time via Colombo is 40 days. Exporters too can avail of the opportunity as the vessels also call at the ports of Jebel Ali and Khorfakkan in the UAE, the release highlighted.

With 5,052 TEUs handled, container traffic in the current fiscal, as on date, has increased by an impressive 38.49 per cent as compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

The next scheduled main line vessel from West Africa is the m.v. CMA CGM Everest, which is expected to call at the Port on May 24.
