Japan's foreign exchange reserves expanded 1.7 percent in April to hit a record 1,135.55 billion U.S. dollars, the Finance Ministry said Wednesday.
The official reserve assets increased for the second consecutive month and surpassed the previous record of 1,118.12 billion U.S dollars set in last October.
According to the ministry, the Japanese government and the Bank of Japan spent 692.5 billion yen in the joint dollar-buying intervention by the Group of Seven industrialized economies on March 18.
