2011-05-09 00:00:00

CHONGQING airport has launched the CNY30 billion (US$4.6 billion) east terminal area project and is aiming to build the largest air logistics park in west China with the widest range of services, Xinhua reports.

The air logistics facility is designed to have a throughput of four million tonnes and covers 400 hectares, offering warehousing, distribution, transshipping, bonded services, processing, freight forwarding and other value-added services.

Chongqing is undergoing industrial structure upgrade and has successfully attracted world-class brands like Hewlett-Packard and Acer and large original equipment manufacturers (OEM) to set up plants there. In the coming three to five years, the city will be a laptop manufacturer cluster of six OEMs with over 200 manufacturers of parts and accessories, and the one third of the world's laptops will be made in Chongqing. The Chongqing airport will then become a key part in the supply chain of the city's IT industry.

Chongqing airport's second runway commenced operation last year and became the first in western China with two runways in use, catering large aircrafts like Boeing 747's need for direct flight to Europe and America. The airport is having the most all cargo routes in west China and will spend another CNY1.2 billion on freighter parking apron, IT cargo exclusive terminal, distribution centre and bonded facilities.
