A GROUND breaking ceremony has been held to mark the beginning of construction of the C$16 million (US$16.8 million) multi-tenant cargo facility at Canada's Edmonton International Airport, which is scheduled to open in early 2012.

The air freight facility is designed to provide 50,000 square feet of cargo handling space with the airport authority providing 22,000 square metres of aircraft handling apron space, reported the Edmonton Journal said.

Wendy Cooper, CEO of Port Alberta, said the new cargo facility is part of a plan "to establish a more integrated, efficient and competitive transportation and logistics system for the capital region."
