Quantum leap for Jebel Ali Port

2011-05-03 00:00:00

A comprehensive manpower management system to optimise workforce deployment is being implemented at the Jebel Ali Port facility by DP World (DPW) in the drive for operational efficiency. It is one of the world’s first major container terminals to integrate such a system.

The introduction of the Rostima Labour Management System (LMS), described as “a quantum leap” by the operator, aims to effectively manage time and significantly reduce costs. Fully integrated with the port’s berth planning and gate automation systems, the LMS determines the best labour requirement based on a forecast of variables such as vessel arrivals and gate appointments.

It also allows for multiple ‘what-if’ scenarios to be analysed in terms of cost and labour utilisation.

The Rostima system is designed to achieve operational continuity around the clock and shorten shift change delays while safeguarding employees’ interests, including optimum sleep cycles, rest periods, visibility over the roster, fair distribution of overtime and days off, meals and prayers and even Ramadan timings.

It is interfaced with the human resource department’s time attendance readers and assigns labour to points of work through mobile text message notification to individual employees. Based on real time information the system is expected to cut the time of completing a single operation by as much as 30%.

“We expect the transition from a purely manual process to be a quantum leap in the UAE Region’s drive for operational efficiency,” said Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice-president and managing director, DP World UAE Region.

The new system will be completely implemented in Jebel Ali terminals by the end of this year.
