Two box truckers shot dead, NATO drivers strike over drone attacks

2011-04-27 00:00:00

TWO container truckers moving NATO supplies to Afghanistan were killed in separate attacks near the Eastern Bypass area of the provincial capital and sub-tehsil Baghbana of Khuzdar district of Pakistan.

NATO containers were on their way to Kandahar from Karachi when guerrillas on motorbikes opened fire near the Eastern Bypass area of the provincial capital, reported the Daily Times of Pakistan.

While the report said "officials" stated the boxes held military hardware, other reports insist that truck-borne containers do not carry munitions, which instead are flown in to avoid frequent roadside ambushes.

In another report, the International News of Pakistan said "not a single vehicle carrying goods for the NATO forces across the border into Afghanistan plied the city roads during the last three days due to the sit-in organised by the Pakistan opposition political party Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) in protest against the US predator drone attacks".

A police official said that no vehicle carrying goods for NATO forces entered Peshawar since April 21. The management of different parking lots on both sides of the Ring Road had also directed the truckers not to park vehicles at the terminals.

"Some of the trucks and containers carrying goods brought to Peshawar before April 22 remained parked at the terminals. The drivers decided not to move their vehicles a day ahead of the PTI sit-in against US drone attacks," said Fayyaz Ahmad, manager of a truck terminal on Ring Road.

Dozens of terminals are located on both sides of the Ring Road, Peshawar where hundreds of trucks and containers are parked during the night. But few trucks and containers were seen parked in the terminals in recent days.
