HK-LA spot rate up 6pc to US$897/TEU, but Shanghai-LA off 16pc at US$890/TEU

THE spot rate for containers shipped from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, set by London shipping consultant Drewry, went up six per cent to US$1,795/FEU ($897/TEU) on April 11 from the week before for the first time since mid-January.


But according to the Shanghai Containerised Freight Index, the April 15 spot rate from Shanghai to the US west coast ports was US$890 per TEU, down 18 per cent from the week before, while the rate from Shanghai to north Europe was $963 per TEU, down 18 per cent from the week before.


The improved Hong Kong to LA spot rate was still 15 per cent down on the January 3 rate of $2,119 per FEU and 9.2 per cent off the year-on-year rate of $1,976 per FEU.


At the same time, the rate from Shanghai to New Zealand and Melbourne was $784 per TEU, up 51 per cent from the week before; to South Africa, it was $854 per TEU down one per cent from the week before, and to Brazil, it was $1,098 per TEU, down three per cent from the week before.
