MITSUI OSK Line (MOL) says that a pilot test has shown its new optimum trim system for vessels developed in partnership with Akishima Laboratories (Mitsui Zosen) Inc is able to increase the fuel efficiency of a 6,400-unit car carrier by up to four per cent compared to a conventional vessel and reduce CO2 emissions.
This comes after tank testing by Akishima Laboratories found that appropriate trim adjustments can significantly reduce wave drag, results that were confirmed in the practical tests involving the car carrier, a statement from the Japanese transportation firm said.
"The optimum trim system quantitatively assesses MOL captains' extensive practical knowledge of vessel running attitudes through tank testing and actual ship test. This data is translated into graphs that make it easy for seafarers to use," it said.
"The optimum trim system is one of the elemental technologies MOL is promoting in its Sempaku ISHIN project to develop concepts for next-generation vessels."
The company added that it plans to adopt the optimum trim system, together with the optimal operational system, on additional types of ships in a proactive approach designed to reduce CO2 emissions across its fleet.
