Hamburg Sud: Expect Tokyo, Yokohama port calls cut on short notice

2011-04-01 00:00:00

BAD weather expected off the coast of tsunami-struck Japan has prompted German carrier Hamburg Sud, rated the world's 13th biggest, to say it may cancel port calls at short notice to Tokyo and Yokohama for fear of nuclear radiation.

"Hamburg Sud is acting according to safeguarding the well-being of the seamen and, at the same time ensuring Japan is not cut off from international commodity flows," said the shipping line's spokeswoman Eva Graumann.

"An appropriately large time window must be available to any vessel calling in Japan for it to leave the region quickly if the situation in Fukushima should escalate further," she said.
