Port of Montreal 2010 box volumes 10pc off record high

2011-01-10 00:00:00

THE Port of Montreal container volume rose to 6.1 per cent in 2010 which is "bringing us very close to the volumes achieved in 2007" and within 10 per cent of 2008, the port's best performance in the last 25 years, said president and CEO Sylvie Vachon.

Dry bulk is yet to achieve 2007 levels but liquid bulk traffic is well at 2008 handling levels reports American Shipper. Ms Vachon spoke of the port's results when she presented Captain Vikram Manchanda of containership Power with the Gold-Headed Cane for the first vessel of the year to reach the port without a stopover, an award which highlights the port's open year round to transoceanic vessels.

She highlighted the port's projects in 2011 including its extension plans of a pier at Cast Terminal which will allow two 270-metre ships to dock at once, an increase in the capacity of the port's electrical network and new common entry point for trucks at the east end of the port road.
