Shanghai's Waigaoqiao terminal phase 6 commences operation

PORT of Shanghai's first terminal for both container and automobile ro-ro, the phase 6 project of the Waigaoqiao terminal, has started operation, Xinhua reported.


The terminal is located at the estuary of the Yangtze River, adjacent to the Waigaoqiao phase 5 terminal in the northeast and the Shanghai Yangtze river tunnel and bridge. Covering an area of 1.8 million square metres and a quay length of 1,538 metres, it has three berths for 150,000-tonne containerships and four 5,000- to 50,000-tonne ro-ro berths. The facility has a capacity of 2.1 million TEU and 730,000 automobiles annually. The whole project entails an investment of CNY4.8 billion (US$720.5 million).


Vice President of Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) said the terminal is able to handle up to 1 million automobile a year actually, which will help it surpass port of Tianjin and Dalian in the auto ro-ro business where the two port used to lead.
