First container train for Shushary

2010-11-08 00:00:00

The first shipment of 56 OOCL empty containers has been dispatched by train from the Logistika-Terminal’s off-dock rail facility at Shushary (St. Petersburg) to Nigozero rail station for the Kondopoga paper plant where they were stuffed with paper products. The loaded containers were then returned to Shushary from where they were delivered St. Petersburg’s First Container Terminal (FCT) for loading aboard an export vessel.

The rail facility which commenced container handling operations in October enables National Container Company (NCC) subsidiary Logistika-Terminal (LT) to make up block trains and deliver empty containers to export manufacturers with the intention of attracting import and export cargoes to St Petersburg Port. Benefits cited by the company include a reduction of transportation costs and congestion on city roads.

The Shushary facility which has an annual capacity of 200,000 teu, currently comprises two rail tracks with a total length of 1,757 m for container block trains and one 422 m long covered track. Located 17 km from FCT and occupying 92 ha, LT has storage capacity for 10,000 laden and 4,500 empty teu.
