APL vows to use low-sulphur fuel in New York, New Jersey

APL, a shipping arm of Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines (NOL), has announced it will burn eco-fuel in the ports of New York and New Jersey, said the company's release.

The agreement is part of a New York Port Authority programme designed to control emissions in New York Harbour. Under the plan, APL vessels will use low-sulphur fuel in auxiliary generators while berthed.

Earlier in October, APL joined a low-sulphur fuel programme at the Port of Hong Kong. It has taken part in similar programmes at the ports of Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle and Vancouver.

APL, the world's fifth-largest container carrier, will enrol 19 vessels in the Port Authority low-sulphur fuel programme, which include every ship the company sends to New York Harbour and is also the most of any carrier participating in such clean air programme, according to a company statement.
