Ports of Auckland quarterly container volume increases 8pc

2010-10-18 00:00:00

LADEN import container volume through the Ports of Auckland increased more than 10 per cent year on year, while export boxes were up four per cent, producing an overall improvement of eight per cent in the quarter ending September 30.

During the three months, transshipment volumes increased more than 15 per cent reflecting a growing use of Ports of Auckland as a North Island hub port, reports the New Zealand Press Association.

Vehicle units were up by more than 25 per cent, including cars, trucks and equipment such as farm machinery.

"The increase in import volumes is reflective of the buying appetite of New Zealanders, and could be seen as encouraging as the country works its way out of the 2008/09 recession," said Ports of Auckland managing director Jens Madsen.
