XINJIANG's city of Hohhot has banned heavy coal trucks from downtown roads in the area circled by the city's second ring highway in a bid to secure smooth flow of traffic, Xinhua reported.

From noon September 30, coal trucks with licence plates ending in an odd number will only be allowed to move on odd-numbered days of the month, and even numbers, on even-numbered days, to use National Highway No 110 in west-to-east direction and No 209, Provincial Highway 102 and 103, Hohhot-Datong expressway south-to-north direction. Tow trucks are now allowed on expressway with maximum speed of 50 kph.

Medium and heavy coal trucks are no longer allowed in areas within the second ring highway, airport expressway, Tengfei Road and Chilechuan Avenue. Heavy trucks carrying other goods are also forbidden to use these roads from 5am to 11pm.

Meanwhile, medium and heavy trucks are banned to use on and off ramps to expressways near downtown.
