Rail service aims to cut Germany/Poland transit time

2008-04-30 00:00:00

Deutsche Bahn AG's freight railroad and Poland's PKP Cargo said they have begun a service that will offer 44 trains per week between Poznan in Poland and the Seddin marshaling yard in Brandenburg, Germany.

The service will use PKP engines, which are compatible with the power systems of both countries so that it will no longer be necessary to change locomotives, cutting the time of the border crossing in half to one hour. The company believes this will make the service more competitive with trucks.

The scheme may be extended in December.
