LAREDO airport is experiencing an increase in air cargo activity, after investing more than US$160 million to improve infrastructure over the past 15 years.
The Texas airport director Jose Flores said the facility is "able to accept heavier aircraft and we think we have a good future when it comes to air cargo." His comments come two months after the airport saw a 50 per cent increase in the air freight volume.
The airport now has 26 companies that often land in Laredo, according to KGNS News.
"The more operations, the more activity at the airport means we get more revenue in terms of landing fees."
Currently, the airport charges US$0.75 per thousand pounds of gross landed weight for those carriers who have a contract with the airport. It charges $0.90 for airport tenants, and $1.20 for those who only come from time to time.
"Not only do we get landing fees, but they purchase fuel and we get the fee on that fuel sale."
