2010-07-20 00:00:00

South Korea's exports in the renewable energy sector grew in the first half by twice the amount of a year ago mainly due to an increase in overseas demand, a government report said Monday.

According to the report by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, exports of solar and wind power components and products rose to 2.14 billion U.S. dollars during the first six months of 2010.

The latest reading was a sharp growth from a year earlier when the figure stood at around 1 billion U.S. dollars.

Of the total amount, 1.8 billion U.S. dollars were absorbed in the solar power generation areas, up 105 percent from the previous year, while wind power-related shipments expanded 37 percent.

Meanwhile, the ministry said that 80 local companies in solar and wind power generation businesses have won new orders amounting to 8.25 billion U.S. dollars during the cited period, which is 6.8 times the amount marked a year ago.
