Talks to build stronger ties between Turkey and the Port of Koper took place last week when Turkey’s Minister of Transport, Mr Binali Yildirim, met with Dr Gregor Veselko, president of the Luka Koper Management Board President, which manages the port, and Dr Janez Po_ar, the Slovenia State Undersecretary for Maritime Transport.
During the meeting Dr Po_ar presented the port’s development plans and emphasised
that as 60% of Turkey’s foreign trade is conducted with European Union states, Slovenia offers excellent distribution for Turkish goods intended for central and Eastern European markets.
He added that likewise, Turkey enjoys a strategically significant position in Europe’s trade with the near East.
The Port of Koper is already heavily involved in shipments with the Turkish market, particularly with containers and the import and export of vehicles. Last year the port handled 360,000 tonnes of cargo for the Turkish market, whist in the first half of 2010 it has handled almost 250,000 tonnes.
