Hanjin Shipping receives first 10,000-TEU mega-ship

SOUTH KOREA's Hanjin Shipping has received its first 10,000-TEU containership, the first in a series of five 10,000-TEU vessels ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries.


Named the Hanjin Korea, the newbuilding is equipped with a fuel-efficient and eco-friendly engine that can reduce both fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.


According to Hanjin Shipping, the vessel will be deployed in the Asia-Europe trade lanes soon after the delivery in July. Namely, the Asian north Europe Service (NE4) that calls at the following ports on rotation: Qingdao, Shanghai, Ningbo, Hong Kong, Singapore, Port Said, Rotterdam, Hamburg, Antwerp, Port Said, Singapore, Hong Kong, then returning to Qingdao.


"The first ship I ever named was the Hanjin Seattle in 1988. Since then and for the past 20 years I named 39 ships," said Hanjin chairwoman Eun Young Choi. "However the Hanjin Korea, the first 10,000-TEU class vessel, is most significant for me and for the company. With this 10,000-TEU ship, we have accelerated the era of mega-sized vessels in the global shipping market."


The other ships in the series are scheduled to be delivered by 2011.
