- Yusen Terminals Inc (YTI), a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK Line has completed the first tenant installed solar project at the Port of Los Angeles. The pilot system will produce 11,806 kWh/year using only 96 modules which represents emission reductions equal to planting 5.7 acres (2.3 hectares) of trees each year.
The Copper, Indium and Selenium (CIS) solar photovoltaic cells are considered to be the "next generation PV modules" for their environment friendly nature, using no silicon. CIS solar cells provide the highest photoelectric conversion efficiency of all thin-film modules due to their excellent absorption of available light.
YTI's pilot project was installed adjacent to the berth to demonstrate the durability of the CIS solar modules in a salt-water/maritime environment.
The YTI project also supports the Port of Los Angeles’ five year commitment to install 10 megawatts of solar power within the port complex.
