2010-05-15 00:00:00

ATHENS - The unemployment rate in Greece reached 12.1 percent in February, the Greek Statistics Agency announced Thursday.

It is the worst figure reported in the country since January 2004.

In January 2010, the unemployment rate was 11.3 percent and, with the debt-ridden country facing a deep recession, Greek and foreign officials and experts fear the number will increase in the following months.

Official statistics show a total of 605,277 people were unemployed in February, with 4,404,051 people employed.

Across the eurozone, average unemployment stood at 10 percent, which is the highest since August 1998, according to official data from Eurostat.
