THE UK's Neptune Maritime Security has issued a statement stressing the need for professional security contractors to protect ships against Somali pirates after a group of sea-robbers were repelled recently with loss of life by armed guards aboard the Panamanian-lagged 2,886-ton Almezaan multi-purpose freighter.
"This recent incident serves to highlight the fact that maritime security is a specialist field, and one in which the margin for error is non-existent," said the statement from Neptune, a group of ex-Royal Marine Special Boat Service commandos who have set themselves up in business recently.
"Recent events can only be seen as a signal failure by certain parties to ensure that all laws governing the use of maritime security were followed," said the statement.
The statement said that they were subject to international laws and not the pirates. "Recognition of this special status is at the core of Neptune Maritime Security's selection and operating procedures," said the statement.
"We at Neptune Maritime Security can assure clients that incidents like this most recent one in the Gulf of Aden are mitigated by our specialists before they even set sail," said the group organised by ex-Royal Navy/Royal Marine Special Boat Service commandoes.
