JAPAN's Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and engine maker Akasaka Diesels have developed a filter to cut diesel particulate matter, the most dangerous form of ship pollution as it penetrates human lungs.
The filter was recently fitted to an MOL Group-operated coastal ferry, the Sunflower Kogane, for testing and the device removed up to 80 per cent of harmful particle matter.
The device is made of smaller silicon carbide ceramic fibre filters, a heating system that burns off accumulated matter to prevent clogging, thus enabling it to remain in constant service.
Based on the success of the recent test, MOL and Akasaka have decided to further upgrade the filter to ready it for installation on main and auxiliary engines in ocean vessels.
