Dublin dockers strike called off with new layoff deal

2010-02-20 00:00:00

DUBLIN dockers have called off a planned strike Tuesday at Dublin's south bank MTL container terminal after a deal over severance and downsizing had been made with the International Transport Workers' Federation, reported Containerisation International.

Earlier the dockers said they would resume their strike after Marine Terminals (MTL), owned by Peel Ports, indicated it "would not abide by the arbitrator's ruling" on redundancies.

Arbitrator Finbarr Flood ruled that both sides should abide by court recommendations on severance at the country's biggest container terminal, reported London's International Freighting Weekly.

But MTL reportedly rejected the recommendation. The strike began last July and lasted 111 days and brought to an end by the Irish Labour Court.
