According to the Port Authority statement freight shipments via the port’s terminals reached 157.8 million tones in 2009, year-over-year 16.7 percent decline in transshipment volumes. The volume of imported commodities dropped by 22.3% - to 81.6 million tons while exported cargoes by 9.7%, to 76.2 million tons. Containers turnover was at 7.309.639 TEUs, a 15.6 percent fall over 2008. The rate of transshipment of ro-ro cargoes decreased by 27.6%, to 3.2 million tons.
Antwerp is the second top leading European operator in volumes of cargo shipments, next to the Port of Rotterdam, which reports just a year-over-year 8.5 decline in cargo handling.
