Hanjin Shipping slow steams on Asia-USEC trade

2010-01-20 00:00:00

SOUTH KOREA's Hanjin Shipping is implementing the slow-steaming technique on one of its Asia-US East Coast services from January 20.

The carrier said in a statement that it is introducing the slow-steaming technique to its All Water Hanjin (AWH) service as part of an agreement with the other container shipping lines participating in the CKYH Alliance, namely Coscon, "K" Line and Yang Ming.

To achieve this goal, Hanjin Shipping is adding one 4,000-TEU vessel to the AWH service "in order to better schedule reliability," bringing the total number of container ships deployed on the service to nine, all of which are operated by Hanjin.

On the other hand, the carrier said it will continue to call at the ports listed in the existing port rotation, which is: Qingdao, Ningbo, Shanghai, Busan, Panama, New York, Wilmington, Savannah, Panama, Busan, Pyeongtaek, returning to Qingdao.

"Like many other major shipping carriers, Hanjin Shipping is pleased to participate in slow-steaming to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in accordance with the global understanding and movement aimed to save the environment," a statement from the carrier said.

To this end, the carrier noted that it recently added a Supply Chain Carbon Calculator to its company website for customers to calculate the amount of CO2 emissions generated during the transportation of their cargo shipments, to enable them to "participate in CO2 emission reduction (efforts) as well."

Back in July Hanjin Shipping set up a Green Management Team tasked with improving the company's energy efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions by 15 per cent by 2015.
