APL to accept shore to ship electricity cold ironing at Oakland

2009-12-22 00:00:00

SHORE-to-ship electric power, or cold-ironing, will commence on five APL containerships in Port of Oakland as part of a US$11 million project to be operational in December of next year.

In a process used by the US Navy for the last decade cold ironing will reduce an annual emissions of nitrogen oxide and particulate matter by 1,500 pounds with a time-line for a federal mandate by 2014, said the company.

Bay Area Air Quality Management District is to fund two grants to the carrier of which includes a grant of $2.8 million from the goods movement bond programme to electrify berths at APL's Global Gateway Central and $2 million from the Carl Moyer programme to equip the first three vessels for cold ironing.

APL Americas region president John Bowe said its job was to move the world's trade and to do so in way that's sensitive to our neighbours' air quality.
